This is a tough one for most people. They cling to their old gmail, yahoo and even aol accounts like grim death. Meanwhile, they are forced to wade through hundreds of junk messages a day in the hopes of finding one email that may be important.
Break the cycle. Get a new better, free email provider and take back your digital life. You can still keep your old accounts, just start using the new account for the important things in your life (medical, banking etc.)
Here are the problems with the free mainstream email providers
- Advertising and tracking via message scanning: Providers may analyze email content (and/or attachments/links) to target ads, improve categorization, or detect spam/phishing.
- IP address and device fingerprinting: When you open mail, they can log IP address, approximate location, device/browser details, and other signals to detect fraud and support measurement.
- Link tracking and “email pixels” (indirect tracking): Messages can include tracking pixels or uniquely identifying links that reveal when/if you open and click.
- Correlation across services: Providers with larger ecosystems can correlate email-related activity with other data (ads/search/cloud/app activity) to build profiles.
- Metadata harvesting (even if content is protected): Even without reading message bodies, sensitive metadata like sender/recipient relationships, timestamps, and subjects can reveal a lot.
- Retention and access policies: Emails/headers/logs may be retained and processed longer than users realize; automated systems and staff access can increase exposure.
- Automated profiling and categorization: Emails can be classified into topics and used to support targeting or product features.
- Third-party integrations: Free tiers often encourage integrations (calendar, document editors, contact syncing, add-ons) that expand what’s shared.
- Security monitoring that overlaps with privacy: Account protection can involve extensive logging (logins, session behavior, failed attempts).
- Account recovery and identity verification: Password resets and verification steps (phone/secondary email/ID checks) add additional processing points.
What You Can Do Today
Switch to either Protonmail and\or Tutanota. Both offer a Free Tier with no obligation.
- No ad-based surveillance: Proton Mail does not sell your personal information to advertisers or scan your inbox “for clues about your interests and habits.”
- Encryption that reduces what the provider can read: With Proton Mail, encryption (including zero-access encryption) is designed so that Proton can’t access your inbox content in the way ad-driven providers would rely on.
- No tracking / no ads focus (Tuta): Tuta states it does not track users and does not send targeted advertisements to your mailbox.
- No inbox scanning (Tuta): Tuta states it can’t scan your emails because of how encryption is implemented.
- Encryption by design for confidentiality: Both Proton Mail and Tuta/Tutanota emphasize encryption as a core feature, so the practical privacy benefit comes from limiting access to message content.
- Less incentive to monetize your data: These providers’ business model is positioned around subscriptions (not ad revenue), so your privacy isn’t what gets optimized for advertising.
- Security features to help prevent account compromise: 2FA and other account protection features reduce the chance that someone can access your email account.
- Cleaner separation between email and ad ecosystems: If an email provider is not profiling you for advertising, it’s generally less able to build targeted marketing profiles from your inbox activity.
